History

Nieuw Kijkduin

This historical landmark is built in 1852 (marked in eastern facade) by the family Kikkert and has a history as family house, it used to be called Nieuw Kijkduin. In those days the grounds were still part of Kurá di Shon Ki.

Between 2022 and 2024, Nieuw Kijkduin was meticulously restored by Stadsherstel Willemstad NV and architect Ronny Lobo, in collaboration with Monumentenfonds. The restoration highlights the building’s distinctive architectural and cultural value, including its Curaçao-typical floor plan, dormer windows, façade layout with doors and windows arranged along five axes, cornices and mouldings, wooden shutter doors and windows, and the original perimeter fence.

We developed a hybrid hospitality concept that aligns with contemporary community-oriented living, allowing guests to stay for both short and extended periods. The building now houses 15 apartments and rooms, each with its own modern en-suite bathroom. Shared living rooms and kitchens on every floor make it easy for guests to connect and feel at home.

Inside, visitors can explore art exhibitions and displays that delve into the history of Ser’i Otrobanda, celebrating the island’s heritage and honouring the enduring spirit of its people.
