CULTURE

The arts at heart

At Drift you just might share your stay with an artist, as we collaborate with them on a wide range of small-scale, high-quality cultural activities. We host exhibitions, lectures, poetry nights, live music and yes the occasional showcase by our artist-in-residence.

These non-profit activities are funded by a percentage of the hotel revenues. This is how we guarantee the continuity of this unsubsidized cultural program, while locally reinvesting our capital and reaching out to all groups in society, particularly welcoming the local community. Call it gentlification, if you will.

Artist in residence

Are you a poet, a painter or a performer? Whatever you are trying to create, we can make you feel at home, so that you can keep on spreading marvelous wonderment and iconic art. You can spend your days in our building and our unique neighborhood of Ser’i Otrobanda, inspiring opportunities await at every corner, as well as connections to local artists in our network.

Sounds like your kind of inspiration? Please send us an email, what you’d like to create and when. We will reach out to you when we need more information or when you’ve been selected. We love to nurture culture.

Machiel Hagedoorn

Everywhere in our monument you see work of our uncle Machiel Hagedoorn (1911-1988). A famous impressionistic painter who was born in Rotterdam in 1911 and attended art school there. Even before the Second World War he started working at Shell Curacao. There he got the nickname “Carpenter with paint” because he worked as a carpenter but also gained a reputation as the builder of sets for the theater and as an artist.

Hagedoorn retired around 1962 and returned to the Netherlands. He stopped working with oil paint because he felt that in this cold climate the paint of his painting did not try. The many pencil drawings and aquarelles that followed are of high quality.

As a tribute of his legacy, we share a small part of our family collection.
